Tooth decay is a common oral health problem that can be easily treated if it is addressed in its early stages. However, left unattended, tooth decay can have serious consequences and may eventually lead to tooth loss. At Brooklyn Smile, our range of restorative dentistry services can repair all stages of damage and decay so that patients can undergo treatment that is best suited to their unique needs. When treating tooth decay, Dr. Gary Herskovits opts for the most conservative treatment option that will be effective, so that patients can preserve as much of the natural tooth enamel as possible. For many of our Brooklyn patients, inlays and onlays allow for the restoration of a tooth suffering from moderate to advanced stages of decay, while allowing for maximum tooth preservation.
Inlays and onlays are partial porcelain restorations that fit onto the tooth to restore enamel that has been damaged by decay. These restorations are a treatment that can treat more extensive damage than a traditional dental filling and are the ideal option for patients whose extent of damage does not require a full dental crown. Inlays and onlays can repair damage that exists in the cavity of the tooth, between the cusps of the tooth, or even on one or more of the tooth’s cusps (the small bumps at the top of the teeth). Inlays and onlays are similar to dental crowns in that they are fabricated in our dental lab, rather than dental fillings, which are applied and formed directly on the tooth.
Because inlays and onlays are fabricated in our dental lab, the treatment process is very similar to that of a dental crown. The tooth is prepared for the placement of the inlay or onlay by removing damaged, decayed tooth enamel. A mold is then taken of the tooth so that the inlay or onlay will be a close, comfortable fit. This mold is sent to our dental lab where the inlay or onlay will be fabricated to Dr. Herskovits’ specifications. These porcelain restorations can be customized by color so that it will be a close match to the natural teeth, allowing the inlay or onlay to blend in seamlessly with adjacent teeth. It typically takes a couple of weeks for the inlay or onlay to be complete, so a temporary restoration will be placed at this first appointment in order to protect the tooth. When the final restoration is complete, the patient returns so that it can be tested for fit and then bonded to the tooth.
Inlays and onlays offer adequate strength and protection for a damaged tooth, while keeping the majority of the natural tooth structure intact. These restorations are comfortable, restore full oral functions, and look natural and attractive. For those with moderate to advanced stages of tooth decay, inlays and onlays are an excellent treatment option.
